Team Fortress 2 Review: Why It’s Still the Best Multiplayer Shooter in 2026

Actually Fun
A timeless masterpiece of chaos and genius design that still holds up after two decades.

The Verdict

Team Fortress 2 is a 9/10. It’s one of the few multiplayer games that treats laughter as a core mechanic, not an afterthought, and that alone puts it in a category most modern shooters can’t touch.

Why TF2 Is Still Worth Playing

TF2 is old. It hasn’t had a major content update in years. And somehow, it’s still more fun than games that shipped last month.

The core loop is just that good. Jump in, pick a class, and within seconds you understand your job. The Medic heals. The Pyro burns things. The Engineer builds stuff and panics when a Spy shows up. There’s no 20-minute tutorial, no onboarding checklist. You figure it out by playing, and that’s the point.

Most live-service games guilt you into grinding. TF2 just wants you to have a good time.

What Makes It So Good

The humor is built into every frame of the game. The voice lines, the physics, the character animations, all of it constantly generates moments that make you laugh out loud or screenshot your screen and send it to a friend. That’s rare. Most competitive shooters take themselves so seriously that losing feels awful. In TF2, even dying is funny half the time.

The nine mercenaries also have more personality than the entire roster of most modern hero shooters. Apex Legends has cool character designs. TF2 has characters you actually like. That connection keeps people coming back for 15+ years.

And the maps? Still sharp. The game’s balance and level design have aged so well that you don’t feel like you’re missing out by not playing something newer. There’s no content treadmill here, just a tight, well-built game that works.

The One Real Problem

Aimbots. In official matchmaking, bot accounts running aim scripts have made public lobbies genuinely frustrating at times. Valve has been slow to address it, and that’s the honest truth.

The workaround is community servers, which are mostly clean and often more fun anyway. But if you drop into casual matchmaking expecting a smooth experience, you might hit a rough lobby first.

Long-term veterans also feel the developer neglect more than newcomers do. When you’ve played for years and nothing changes, the stagnation is real.

Bottom Line

TF2 figured out something that most shooters still haven’t: games are supposed to be fun first, competitive second. The bot problem is real and annoying, but the soul of this game is something studios with 10x the budget are still trying to copy. If you’ve never played it, it’s free and worth a few hours. If you stopped playing, it’s worth coming back.
