Apex Legends Review: Great Gameplay, Brutal Monetization (5/10)

Depends On You
A stylish hero shooter that lost points for sacrificing the legacy of Titanfall for Gundam skins and microtransactions.

The Verdict

Apex Legends is a 5/10. The shooting feels great, the movement is the best in the genre, and the Legends system adds genuine tactical depth. But the monetization has gotten out of hand, cheaters are still a real problem, and it’s hard to shake the feeling that Titanfall 3 got sacrificed so EA could sell Gundam skins.

The Highs

Movement that actually respects you Respawn built something special here. Sliding into a fight, wall-jumping for repositioning, using your Legend’s kit to create space, it all flows in a way that most battle royales never even attempt. The moment-to-moment gameplay is an 8 out of 10, no argument.

Legends that actually feel different Each character has a real identity, both in personality and in how they play. Good team comps genuinely matter, and that tactical layer keeps the game from going stale the way pure gun-skill shooters do.

The Lows

Titanfall’s legacy is being sold piece by piece This is the big one. Apex didn’t just launch instead of Titanfall 3. It has actively pulled from that universe’s lore and converted it into cosmetic content. If you were a Titanfall fan, that stings, and it comes through in the score.

The shop feels like a luxury boutique High-priced skins, limited-time bundles, outside IP collaborations that have nothing to do with the game’s world, it adds up. Competitive games should feel like arenas. This one increasingly feels like a storefront that happens to have a shooting game attached.

Cheating is still a real issue Like a lot of free-to-play shooters, Apex has a persistent cheating problem. It doesn’t ruin every match, but it ruins enough of them, especially at the moments that matter most.

Apex Legends is a brilliant engine running on the wrong fuel. The gameplay core is genuinely world-class, but monetization fatigue and the weight of a neglected legacy pull the overall score to the middle. It’s fun for a few sessions. Long-term, the wallet pressure makes it hard to love.
