Hogwarts Legacy

Depends On You
Exploring the castle and dueling are a joy early on. PC stutter and a chore-filled open world wear the magic thin.

Is Hogwarts Legacy fun? It depends. Hogwarts Legacy scores 7/10 for fun. Exploring the castle and dueling feel great early, but a slow opening, PC stutter and a chore-heavy open world wear it down.

Where this score comes from: Steam player reviews, last checked against 324 recent and most-helpful English reviews in October 2026. Hogwarts Legacy on Steam

You get a wand, a house and the run of Hogwarts in the 1890s, a century before Harry shows up. The castle is the star and the game knows it. The trouble is everything wrapped around the castle: a long intro, a fussy PC port and a big map packed with busywork.

Is Hogwarts Legacy Fun? The Verdict

For the first stretch, mostly yes. About three in four players under 20 hours recommend it, and a lot of this month’s reviews come from people who grabbed it on a deep sale and liked it more than they expected. Several say they don’t care about Harry Potter at all and still had a good time. The unhappy ones fall into two camps: PCs that stutter or crash, and players who found the world wide but thin once the early wonder faded, sometimes within 10 to 15 hours.

What Works

The castle comes first. Players keep describing the same pleasures: wandering the halls, finding hidden rooms, talking paintings, a detour through Hogsmeade on the way to the next quest. The broom opens the map up, and flying over the Highlands is a highlight for many. Combat is the surprise. Spells chain into combos, it is easy to pick up, and players who switch to hard say it gets properly tense. Plenty of reviewers call it a game to unwind with after a long day, one you can enjoy without being good at games.

What Kills the Fun in Hogwarts Legacy

A slow first few hours. Before you play, the game asks you to accept agreements, and some extras sit behind linking a WB account. Then come long tutorials and cutscenes, some unskippable, that take the camera away from you. One player said the talent tree and even picking your outfit take hours to unlock.

PC performance. Stutter is the top reason new players leave a negative review. People with mid-range and high-end cards report frame drops in fights, shader compiling on launch, crashes every hour or two, and a few lost saves. Some got it smooth after tweaking settings; others never did.

A checklist world. Past the castle, the map fills up with Merlin Trials, bandit camps, caves and collectibles. Players say they solve the same puzzles dozens of times, each class happens once, and choices barely change the story. Fans of the setting shrug it off. Others call the middle of the game a slog of fetch quests.

Bottom Line: Is Hogwarts Legacy Worth Playing?

If you love the setting and your PC can handle it, yes, especially on sale. The first dozen hours of exploring Hogwarts and dueling are a lot of fun, so play the story and skip the checklist when it starts to drag. If you want an open world that keeps its pace all the way through, Red Dead Redemption does that better.

For comparison, we rated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 6/10 and Starfield 4/10 on the same fun-only scale.

See where it lands in the most overrated games.
