Space Marine 2 Review: The Best Warhammer 40K Game Ever Made

Actually Fun
A brutal and satisfying Gears-like romp that makes you feel like a 7-foot tank.

The Verdict

Space Marine 2 is exactly what a Warhammer 40K game should be: loud, heavy, and completely relentless. It nails the Gears of War feel while delivering something the franchise has never had before. This is the 40K power fantasy done right, and it’s one of the best action games in years.

Why It’s So Good

Most modern shooters feel weightless. You’re floating around, sprinting past enemies, barely registering the hits. Space Marine 2 does the opposite. Every chainsword swing lands with thud. Every bolter shot feels like it matters. The game constantly reminds you that you’re a 7-foot biological tank built to kill, and it backs that feeling up with systems that actually work.

The execution mechanic is the heart of it. Wading into a Tyranid swarm, surrounded on all sides, and carving through dozens of xenos in a single push-forward sequence never stops feeling good. It’s not just about surviving. It’s about looking cinematic while you do it.

What Stands Out

The visual scale is genuinely impressive. Imperial architecture looms over every level, and enemy counts on screen hit numbers most games wouldn’t dare attempt. The environments feel like the 41st Millennium, not a sanitized version of it.

The game also respects your time. There’s no bloated tutorial, no slow open-world crawl. You’re in the action within minutes, and the story keeps pace the whole way through.

Where It Stumbles

The developers removed or altered some cosmetic items post-launch, which frustrated a chunk of the player base. For a game with strong long-term hooks, cosmetic personalization matters, and pulling that away mid-stream left a sour taste.

The Operations mode (the co-op endgame) also gets repetitive faster than it should. If you’re looking for deep narrative variety to keep you logging in for months, you’ll hit a ceiling.

The Bottom Line

Space Marine 2 is a 9/10. It gives 40K fans a massive sword, a heavy gun, and ten thousand bugs to kill, and it executes that premise better than any game in the franchise’s history. Linear, high-quality action games aren’t dead. Space Marine 2 is proof.
