Red Dead Redemption

Actually Fun
Faster and punchier than its sequel, with great gunfights and little busywork. Dated controls and the launcher drag.

Is Red Dead Redemption fun? Yes. Red Dead Redemption scores 8/10 for fun. It throws you into gunfights and bounty hunts fast, with far less busywork than its sequel.

Where this score comes from: Steam player reviews, last checked against 268 recent and most-helpful English reviews in October 2026. Red Dead Redemption on Steam

Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar’s 2010 western, brought to PC in 2024. You play John Marston, a former outlaw sent after his old gang. Undead Nightmare is included, and it is single-player only, since the online mode did not make the trip.

Is Red Dead Redemption Fun? The Verdict

Red Dead Redemption scores 8/10 on immediate fun. About nine in ten players under 20 hours recommend it, and plenty of them came straight from the sequel. Their surprise is the same: the older game moves faster. Missions get to the shooting quickly. It loses points for controls that feel their age and a Rockstar launcher that keeps some people from playing at all.

What Works

The gunplay is the hook. Enemies react to every hit, aim spread is tighter than in the sequel, and you go down fast too, so fights feel tense and skillful instead of spongy. Several fans of the newer game said the guns and ragdolls here are better.

It respects your time. Skinning an animal takes a button press, not a cutscene. Missions follow a simple shape: ride out, clear a gang, chase someone down, get paid. One longtime fan admitted that is the whole formula and asked why it matters when it is this fun.

Between missions you can clear gang hideouts, chase bounties, play poker or break horses. Undead Nightmare, the zombie campaign, gets as much praise as the main story, and a few players liked it more.

Marston is the character players bring up most, and people who played the sequel first say the ending hits even harder.

What Kills the Fun in Red Dead Redemption

The controls are from 2010. Movement and horse riding feel stiff at first, and one player coming from the sequel turned it down after less than three hours because it all felt old and awkward. Keyboard and mouse take some practice.

The Rockstar launcher is the worst part. One buyer could not get through account verification and refunded within minutes. Another kept being told they were logged out and had a save corrupted. Only a small share of players hit this, but when it happens, it happens before any fun starts.

The pacing wobbles. A few players found the early ranch missions and stretches of Mexico slow, though others say the story picks up in Mexico and the last act is excellent. None of it comes close to the slow burn of the sequel.

Price comes up a lot, even in happy reviews: $49.99 is steep for a 2010 game. That does not change how fun it is, so it does not change the score.

Bottom Line: Is Red Dead Redemption Worth Playing?

Yes. If the slow opening of Red Dead Redemption 2 wore you out (we rated it 3/10), this is the western you were hoping for: quicker, simpler and built around the shooting. Grab a controller, wait for a sale, and expect a few rough edges from a game this old.

For comparison, we rated Fallout: New Vegas 8/10 and God of War 8/10 on the same fun-only scale.

How does IsItFun score Red Dead Redemption?

One question: did it deliver immediate fun? Graphics, story depth, difficulty and critical acclaim are ignored. Pick-up-and-play accessibility is rewarded; anything that makes you wait for the fun to start is penalized.
